San Jose del Cabo Mission

One of the most popular San Jose del Cabo attractions is the Mission San Jose del Cabo Añuití, a Jesuit mission that has faced floods, hurricanes, and rebellions, standing as a testament to both the enduring spirit of its founders and the resilience of human faith. Founded in 1730, it was the southernmost of the missions established by the Jesuits during Mexico’s colonial period and played a pivotal role in the history of the Baja California Sur.

Although the mission was rebuilt after the hurricane of 1918, much of the original structure and design were preserved by the city. The current San Jose del Cabo church was built in 1940 and is located in Plaza Mijares, close to the site of the original mission. The entrance of the church features a mosaic depicting the persecution of Padre Nicholas Tamaral, one of the earliest missionaries.
